Krista's Ode to Vacation (1/19/2003)

Since Krista and Matt will be here tomorrow to visit, I thought I would post her Ode to Vacation, which she wrote this past winter...

An ode to vacation:

The summer comes but once a year.
When our teacher relatives stop and cheer.
For this summer, I propose.
Another romp, bring lots of clothes.

To Put-in-Bay, Ohio, you see.
To lay on the beach and maybe parteeee.
Drive around all day in golf carts.
Or lay around on the beach and have stanky farts.

It is up to you what you want to do.
I am just proposing the place for our zoo.
We can relax, boat, eat, and play.
There much to do each and every day.

Here is a web site that explains it all.
Put-in-Bay.com, check it out

TWDF.NET Classics Presents: Ticketing Industry Poetry

Seating Preferences

THERE ARE FOUR SEATS LEFT
ON THE RIGHT SIDE ISLE
ABOUT HALF-WAY DOWNM TO THE PIT,
BUT THE TWO SEATS BEHIND
THE PILLAR IN NINE
JUST REALLY AIN'T WORTH _ _ _ _,
SO DISCOUNT THOSE
AND YOU SHOULDN'T SELL
B-12, WE CAN'T USE THAT,
IT IS RIGHT BEHIND
MRS. JOHNSON/SMYTHE,
THE LADY WHO WEARS THE HAT?
YOU CAN SELL AGAIN
THAT PAIR IN 10,
I'M SURE IT WILL BE ALL RIGHT,
JOE SWENSON DIED
ON THURSDAY MORNING...
THE SERVICE IS TONIGHT,
THERE'S GUM ON THE SEAT ON J-29
SO REMEMBER NOT TO SELL IT,
AND THERE'S BEER ON THE RUGS
AT THE BACK OF THE HOUSE
AND I DON'T WANT FOLKS TO SMELL IT....

I COULD TALK SOME MORE
OF THE DAYS OF YORE,
WHEN SUPPORT STAFF HAD TO WORK!
NOW YOU HUNT AND PECK
WHILE YOU PLAY HI TECH,
AND IF YOU COMPLAIN....YOU'RE A JERK!

-Dave (2/13/97)

When your ticketing software isn't working

What would a stuck seat look like
If the chairs all matched the screen?
Would we have to put in seat belts,
Make them amber, white or green?
I'd laugh so hard I think I'd spill
my coffee on my sweater
If I saw allocated seats
replaced by giant letters.
But real-life seat maps aren't all
fun and games, you must remember!
Just recently, this situation
happened last December:
A patron couldn't leave due to
another "perf-chart" caper,
His ride left hours ago; the
reservation now is vapor.
He swivels to the right and left
and overcome with sorrows,
The seats that all around him stand
have now become up arrows.
What happens next? Will someone help
him get some satisfaction?
Will someone call support and have them
sort out this transaction?
How do we rise our heads and dig
us out of this malaise?
I know! We'll fax him back and say
"We've opened up a case!"
The triage group will cancel lunch
to rank the bugs at noon,
By five o'clock, they're wondering,
will this be over soon?
(They said don't bring a sandwich
since we'll only meet an hour
But Don and I will bring our food;
OUR stomachs won't be sour.)
By six o'clock the calls come in
from hither and from yon
To say that if it's all not fixed
Our clients will be gone!
Don't worry then, we'll make amends
And e're the sun comes rising
Another update we will send
To thwart a great uprising.
I hear you now, did we forget
to do a round of testing?
Well, you can do that late at night
while other folks are resting.
We also need a writeup telling
how the features work,
Or else the trainers on the road
will prob'ly go berzerk!
So, how's our patron doing now,
the one - you will remember,
Who's stuck between weird characters
And has been since December?
I'm please to report, he's quite a sport
And very much alive.
His problem was fixed, and his sorrow nixed
With Artsoft Two-point-five.
The software was great, just a little bit late,
And the staff knew just what to do.
They treated him most courteously:
"What can we do for you?"
The training was impeccable,
And so were all the 'docs',
The patron, so impressed by this, said
Let me buy some stocks!

What You Didn't Know About SpongeBob SquarePants

Sure, all of the little ones love SpongeBob SquarePants. But, did you know that he has been linked to the violent video game, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City?

Harry Potter and other Stuff

Well I finally stopped by the bookstore to be the 2,776,938th person to get the big new Harry Potter novel. I have a book that I'm finishing right now which actually has more pages than this one, but I wanted to get a copy before they were on the 12th edition. I wonder what the Phoenix is, or why it has an order,

harry.gif

or if I'll ever learn how to spell Hermoine. Is the Order of the Phoenix something we're waiting to be fulfilled, like "I can't wait until my order for a Phoenix comes in the mail?" Or is it the opposite of the Chaotic Pheonix? There's few things worse than chaotic pheonixes.

The cops had a slow night tonight during law and order. I was hoping for a big pile

of snappy one-liners to distract me from missing the grand opening of Heinen's the new grocery store by us. Now they'll probably be sold out of everything tomorrow, and what'll we feed Krista and Matt when they get here on Saturday?

Dad, you made me hungry for walleye. Maybe we'll have to show up at Great Lakes soon for some walleye bites. I could probably go fishing anywhere in Portage County, Ohio, which is east of here. Large parts of the county are still underwater.

In useless news, I finally switched from the 2-blade Sensor Excel razor to the 3 blade Mach-3 turbo. I've been afraid of that ever since the Mad-TV episode where they had a parody of the Mach 3 commercial, where the 3rd blade continues to cut through your flesh and you need to get bandaged up every morning, but at least you have no facial hair. Why do they need to call it the Mach 3 turbo anyway? 3 times the speed of sound isn't fast enough, so you have to add turbo to that? What do you get? Mach 4 (at 6,000rpms?!?)

A lot of folks have been criticizing Cedar Point and the ride manufacture, Itamin, for having trouble getting their new roller coaster, Top Thrill Dragster fully operational. I couldn't begin to find fault with them since I can't even keep my office park rides operational. Tonight when I was working late, I was running the ferris wheel and the coaster full-throttle, figuring that at least the plastic people could be having fun, but after about 20 minutes, the gear on the ferris wheel slipped so it stopped turning, and the roller coaster train stopped being able to make a full circuit and rolls back on the final hill. I'll have to call in the maintenance workers.

Zombies from the Beyond

Aunt Grace wrote me back to say that they had gone to Lanesboro, Minnesota to see Zombies from the Beyond. From just that little piece of information, I was able to discover that they must have gone to the Commonwealth Theater. More about historic Lanesboro here.

The picture of the cast for Zombies from the Beyond at the Commonwealth Theater link looks absolutely frightening. Grace, what was this play about? You've got some explaining to do. You can tell us more about this by clicking on Comments..

Krissy's knee injury

For those of you who didn't know, Krissy is unfortunately laid up in bed with a knee injury. On Monday when Kelly and I were in Connecticut, we all piled into their bedroom and ate pizza and strawberry shortcake whille watching Good Will Hunting. Some of us didn't make it until the end of the movie, because the length of the movie was extended by so many commercials. If anyone remembers what happens to all the characters, please post comments :)

Krissy, here is a cartoon that might cheer you up :) and we hope you're up and about soon!

In case it's hard to read:
"Is that an enema?"

"No, it's a new kind of sponge bath, now we're bathing patients from the inside out!"
"No, we're having a party and this is our new cocktail dispenser. What'll you have?"
"No, we're just hooking you up directly to the hospital tv! It's only $3 a day!"

Evacuation Route

Even though our child that we have not yet adopted won't be able to read any language for a little while, we are still required by state law to post evacuation routes in prominent places throughout the household. This sign is on her future bedroom door, along with a note that we will have fire drills on the 15th of every month, and that the drill will begin when you hear the whistle blow three times. We have finally found a use for the Tickets.com whistles that they gave us during our initial public stock-offering. We were supposed to blow them when the stock went above $20.00, but we are content to use the for fire drills. Ironically, the evacuation signs were a big hit at our Derby Day party in May. Who knew? We'll continue to keep the signs posted because we need to make sure that Irene, our adoption assessor, is proud of us, not to mention that it will remind us what to do in case of an actual emergency.

CRAN CONFERENCE

We just got a note from the folks at CRAN, the adoption agency in Bogotá that we are working with. CRAN stands for Centro para la Rehabilitación y Adopción para del Niño, but no one ever really says all that. They are having their 25th anniversary and are having a conference in Bogotá in September. It looks like it would be fun, so we are probably going to cash in some miles and go down there.

We're #6 on this list right now, as far as we know..

To see their animated presentation, click on the following link..

CRAN Invitation

Click on "Continue Reading" to see the entire text from the CRAN folks.

To All CRAN Families:

As most of you probably have heard by now this year CRAN celebrates its 25th anniversary. This is just a perfect excuse to see you again and share with you and your family our present and our future.

We hope then that you are able to join us in Bogotá-Colombia on Sept. 24th-27th 2003.

For each day starting on the 24th we have a special event that has been carefully though out:

* 24th September: Knowing CRAN: this will be a day where you will
have the opportunity to be at CRAN with Colombian CRAN families, CRAN staff and Representatives from the International Adoption Agencies. We will share with you our vision for the coming years, our achievements to the present day including those products and services aimed at strengthening our bonds with our families abroad and most important we will have testimonies from adopted children, adoptive parents as well as biological mothers as to how their encounter with CRAN had an impact in their lives.

* 25th September: Academic Forum: it will have the participation
of both international and national well-known "practitioners" in the area of Strategic Alliances between NGO's, State and Private Sector which address the problem of abandoned children. It is a "Best Practice Sharing" type of forum, which has as its main objective to create additional awareness as to how to address the problem of children at risk. Local policy makers as well as Infancy State Institutions and representatives from the private sector will be the public attending the forum in addition to you.

* 26th September: CRAN Family Day: Colombian families will "adopt"
for the day our families from abroad taking them for a tourist trip outside Bogotá which includes a typical lunch. The day is intended to provide national and international families with a space to get to know each other better, allow international families to further understand and discover our culture through the eyes of an adoptive Colombian family and strengthen bonds which in the long run will be useful to all. We hope is a fun day for all.

* 27th September: 25th Anniversary Celebration: this will take
place at CRAN, we will inaugurate our new buildings which have been constructed with the generous donations made by CRAN parents and which will allow us to attend more needed children, we will award recognitions to those people whose every day work make possible CRAN's high quality services to our beneficiaries: our Staff and overall we will be together lunching and toasting for the next 25 years to come.

We are enclosing the official electronic invitation hoping you can read it (when it asks you with what program to open it and it gives you various options, click the icon that has a computer which is called "explorer").

If you are coming we recommend that you get in touch with the representative of your international adoption agency in Colombia. Below we are providing their name and email address for you to get in touch with them. They have been very kind in helping us organize the logistics for this event.

Again we sincerely hope to see you then,

Warm regards,

XIMENA LLERAS PUGA

Cooling Off

With all the hot weather we've had lately, I thought it might help to remember what it was like on February 17, at least around here, when I attempted to build a snow fort.

P2170003W.jpg

Unfortunately, it only got to be 4 rows tall because the next day it warmed up and started melting. Once the snow was gone, of course, then we had the deep freeze.

Arne & Gabriella's new baby boy

Our friends Arne and Gabriella just had their first baby! Arne works with me and Kelly at tickets.com and they have a house about a mile from us. We'll have to dig up some pictures that include them. Arne grew up in Norway and Gabriella is fluent in Spanish, so the Sagnes family gives us good opportunities to practice our Spanish, German, and Norwegian. But not Swedish. Never, never Swedish.

From Arne:
----------------------
Ladies and gentlemen,
I'd like to introduce you to the latest addition to the Sagnes
family: Jostein Aleksander Sagnes was born on July 2nd, 2003, at 22:02 EST.
He weighed 8.2 pounds and measured 20 inches. We have been discharged
and everything is going very well. Here are some pictures of the little bundle of joy. :-)

Downtown Disney

Ann, Dick, Rob, Kelly, Kristopher, Paul, Jacob, Jill, Danny and Matthew try to make everyone believe that we actually ate at the Rainforest Cafe in Downtown Disney. This was shortly before I sneaked off to hear the madrigal singers from Elyria, Ohio, who happened to be there.

Dad's Retirement Party!

Here are some pictures from Dad's retirement party from May 7, 2003, at Anthony's Ocean View in New Haven.

The RJs (Rob, Rick and Jon) sing: "Good night, VP, Well it's time to go! We think you're getting sleepy, V-P-D-P, because it's time to go!" The other J (Jim) couldn't make it, so we had Dad step in on the bass line.
